Amnesty International is one of the best-known organizations in the world that helps people in need all over the world. With a lot of power and experience, this organization is able to take action by lobbying for major changes and advocating in courts for people who might not have a voice otherwise.
Another organization that does good work and is well known is the American Civil Liberties Union. They work to help people who are targeted due to their differences, whether they might be based on race or gender.
Established in the 1920’s, they have been a factor in many landmark cases and decisions related to important issues around the nation, including separation of church and state, reproductive rights and police misconduct.
The Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund was created when journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin received a settlement stemming from their unjust arrest. The two men were found to be unfairly targeted by then Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was upset that they continued to publish a newspaper that reported his many transgressions against citizens.
Arpaio then had both men unjustly arrested in the middle of the night to try and scare them into silence. Once released, Larkin and Lacey began mounting a lawsuit against the Sheriff for violating their rights.
With the 3.75-million-dollar settlement they were awarded, the Frontera fund was established to help support groups all over Arizona that protect civil and migrant rights against persecution. They also hope to help promote freedom of speech in all environments.
Larkin and Lacey were among the first to report on the unfair targeting of Latinos in Arizona under Arpaio, and with the Frontera fund continue to work against police profiling and other transgressions committed against this population.
