Who says you can’t mix a little business with pleasure? Certainly not Mike Baur who is always busy making a lot of ideas come to life as executive chairman of the Swiss Startup Factory (SSUF) but who can turn those businesses into something fun like he did at a recent beer hack. The hack was coordinated between Feldschlösschen Brewery and the SSUF with the the intention of making beer sales and marketing digitized and more readily accessible to customers. So attendees of the SSUF along with Baur were given a run of the brewery, a taste of its beer and then were taken to a nearby bar where they were given space to put their inspiration to work in coding and business planning. The ideas that came out of this event were remarkable, but one winner that came away was a take on the Uber app but renamed “U-BEER” since it featured beer delivery.
Mike Baur’s story of founding the SSUF is about how he left a steady executive banking job to go into the unpredictable field of business startup investing. He was 16 when he first decided to go into banking, and he enrolled as an intern at UBS, a high-ranking bank in Switzerland in the years before the recession. His higher education was completed at the University of Bern and Rochester University, and as he moved from intern to accounts manager, he received a lot of praise from his superiors. He gave great advice to some of the wealthiest patrons of UBS, and eventually he was given an even more lucrative contract at the commercial bank Clariden Leu. But then the recession happened and the world of banking Baur once knew began to change. Everything now seemed to have red tape, and he felt he no longer wanted to do the same old routine he always did.
Mike Baur left the bank offices and told his former colleagues he was going to make it in the venture capital niche and new business owners would soon have better access to capital. Most of those old colleagues thought his plans were unnecessary because the Swiss government already had some grant programs for small businesses, but Baur sold several people on the idea including his current partner Max Meister and the owners of Red Bull Media and Goldback Group. Several universities were also interested in the SSUF idea, and in its inaugural year the enrollment was outstanding. The SSUF has since put out hundreds of new business ideas and has big plans for future batches of attendees.

But a recent study showed that kids who play in the dirt, spend time with animals, and get plenty of outside time tend to have better stress-resilient immune systems than their pet-free, city-dwelling counterparts. They also may have a lower risk for mental illnesses. This is all according to a new study that just dropped.
Of course, we’ve long since known that spending time outside will typically do more good than bad, and that pets can reduce stress levels and even help with anxiety, but this study has gone even further, proving just how much such simple things can impact us in the long run.
Christopher Lowry, a co-author of the study and CU Boulder integrative physiology professor, said that this wasn’t very surprising to him. He was quoted as saying that there has been plenty of documentation that exposure to both rural environments and pets during development can help lower one’s risk of allergies and asthma later in life. He said that this isn’t as big of an important find to overall health as it is to mental health.
This can be a great step in helping to not just “treat”, but potentially prevent these types of problems. Of course, no one is saying that this is 100% a cure, but that it can help and that there are significant differences between those who were exposed to bacterias, allergens, and nature and those who were not.

The regular use of saunas invokes higher healing properties, this according to a study performed by UK research fellow at the University of Bristol, Setor Kunutsor. In this particular study, research participants were asked to take a sauna four to seven times weekly. The surprising result was that people who followed this decreased their probability of having a stroke by 60%; as compared to those who only used a sauna once a week.

The participants in the Kunutsor’s research study, all lived in Finland, a country where saunas are a part of holistic living everyday. And during this time they had a battery of health tests performed at regular intervals.
Using the data extracted from the health tests, it was determined that out of three separate categories within the study participants, 155 out of 1,000 suffered a stroke. The categories were divided as such:
• those who used a sauna once per week
• those who took a sauna two to three times weekly
• those who used saunas four to seven times per week
The participants in the last category fell into the group with fewer strokes. Although people in this group did have other health conditions that are thought to be more prevalent for heart disease and stroke. This included individuals who smoked cigarettes, had high cholesterol and/or diabetes.

Fortunately, a recent study published by the American Academy of Neurology has found an odd activity that reduces the chances of a stroke by up to 62%.
Depending on how often one uses a sauna can apparently highly effect whether one will have a stroke in the future. Over a period of 15 years, over 1600 men and women were monitored. They kept track of other factors that can affect heart health, such as if the participants smoked or were overweight. Participants all used the Finnish style sauna and reported not only how often they used the sauna, but also how long they spent in the sauna each time. During the study, there were a total of 155 strokes.
The scientists then took this data, and adjusted for the variables as mentioned above, and found some very interesting information. The difference between someone who used the sauna once per week and someone who used the sauna two to three times in a week was a 12 percent decrease in likelihood to have a stroke for those who used the sauna more. Study participants who used the sauna four or more days each week had a 62 percent decrease in chance of a stroke. That is a significant difference!
Like any study, further research needs to be done to understand why this is and verify it works. Nonetheless, if you are interested in reducing your likelihood of a stroke a trip to the sauna may be in order.

Researchers at the University of Kentucky achieved remarkable results when they recently tested an extract taken from grape seeds on leukemia cells. With 24 hours of being exposed to the extract, more than 76% of the cancer cells died.
The study was published in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal published by the American Association of Cancer Research. The report says the grape seed extract prompted leukemia cells to “commit suicide.”
Products taken from grape seeds have long been of interest to researchers because grape seeds themselves have been favored by holistic and natural healers for years. The problem has always been a lack of formal scientific studies published in peer-reviewed journals. That’s what makes the University of Kentucky study so significant.
Does this mean that people battling leukemia should eat a lot of grape seed extract? The short answer is probably no – although doing so would cause no harm. But researchers say there is still a lot of work to be done to understand how this particular extract of grape seed works to kill cancer cells.
